Fukagawa Learning Garden
Research Exchange study at SIT, Japan
Advisor: Dr. Kazunobu Minami August , 2018 Located on the east side of Sumida river (the main waterbody cutting central Tokyo in half), the Fukugawa library is situated in the south side of Kiyosumi garden. This project brings the program which is usually inside the library out into the nature and to attract the changing group of local young visitors in the area.
1.) Propose new entrance: Celebrating the new educational surrounding garden, making entrance free for students up to high school level. 2.) Inside-out library: Bringing the library program outside, turning the green space into the learning garden and old building into the archive. 3.) Extension of the old building: Bringing out programs such as light reading zone, children playground outside of the building to attract more local people to come. 4.) Learning garden: The connection of learning garden with its six satellite pavilions scattered and equally distributed throughout the area, both inside and outside. 5.) Linkage: The learning garden intended to connect with the nearby transportation system, school and museum. 6.) District: Connection of the learning garden to outside, turning the entire area into the creative district, as a whole. 市民の文化活動の拠点となる図書館を核とした複合施設を設計する。これからの図書 館に求められる機能は、ただ本が並び、閲覧室が用意された旧来の公共施設とは大き く異なる。地域の住民が知的生活を行うに必要となる情報基盤であると同時に、互いに 交 流 し 、情 報 発 信 す る 場 と し て も 機 能 す る こ と が 期 待 さ れ る 。現 在 の 区 立 深 川 図 書 館 を 建て替えるとしたら、どの場所に計画するのが最も妥当であるのかを、建築計画的な視 点からだけでなく、都市計画的な視点や工事計画の視点からも、検討していただきた い。子育て支援、青少年活動支援、市民活動支援の諸機能や生涯学習の機能を複 合化して、地域の総合的な生活拠点となり、新図書館がこの地域の持続的な発展に寄 与していくことを望む。新図書館においては、清澄庭園と機能的、視覚的に連携したものとなるよう設計することが期待される。
